The 519 is saddened to learn of the passing of Salah J. Bachir, C.M., O.Ont., prominent Canadian entrepreneur, philanthropist, arts patron, author, and tireless advocate for 2SLGBTQ+ communities.
As Honorary Patron of The 519, Salah played a transformative role in the organization’s growth and impact. In 2004, he spearheaded the successful capital campaign to expand and renovate The 519, a contribution recognized through the naming of the Salah J. Bachir Wing. He also led The 519 Annual Gala for nearly two decades, helping raise critical funds to support the organization’s year-round programs and services.
“When I first came to The 519 nearly two decades ago, Salah was already a force in our community: unrelenting in his advocacy, unapologetically himself, absolutely fabulous, and fiercely committed to supporting the community and The 519. In the weeks ahead, countless stories will be shared about his legendary philanthropy, as well as the friendship, loyalty, and generosity he showed to so many. His extraordinary impact will be felt for generations to come. We will miss him dearly. As we mourn this profound loss, we will continue to proudly honour his legacy of generosity, compassion, and unwavering commitment to the 2SLGBTQ+ community.”
— Maura Lawless, Executive Director, The 519
“On behalf of The 519’s Board and our entire community, I wish to express our grief at Salah’s passing, our condolences to his loved ones, and our sincere gratitude for his life of service and generosity. Through his vision, courage, and steadfast advocacy, Salah helped strengthen the work of The 519 and inspired countless others along the way. His dedication to 2SLGBTQ+ communities leaves a legacy that cannot be measured. His impact will endure for generations, in the work of The 519, through the lives of the many thousands of individuals who benefited from his tireless efforts, and in the memories of those who had the privilege of knowing him. We are profoundly grateful that Salah was part of our community, and his legacy will continue to guide and inspire us.”
— Tom Spence, Chair, The 519 Board of Management
Salah’s passing is a deep loss to our organization and for our communities. The Salah Bachir Fund has been set up in honour of his life and legacy, and honouring his wishes.
