When The 519 opened its doors in 1976 2SLGBTQ+ communities were taking up space in  new and powerful ways. Activism had sparked change, even as acceptance remained uncertain. The fight for rights was fiercely alive.

For fifty years, The 519 has been a place where community gathers, organizes, celebrates, and shows up for one another. It’s a place to imagine something better.

Countless people have poured their time, love, anger, hope, and care into The 519. You can still feel it in the scuffed floors, the chipped paint, and the energy that refuses to fade.

Over the years, we’ve stumbled and risen, marched and rebuilt. After fifty years, we’re still a work in progress. The work is never done.
This year, we’re honouring the past, celebrating the present, and shaping what comes next.
So join us. Show up. Celebrate. Reflect. Organize.
Be part of the next fifty years.

We will never stop serving.

Community Stories

We want to hear from you!

We believe the story of The 519 is best told in the voices and experiences of those who have helped build it. So, to honour this anniversary year, we’re inviting our community to reflect on what this place has meant in their lives.

These stories will be collected, shared and preserved as part of our 50th anniversary — a commemoration of the past 50 years, and a source of inspiration for the next 50 years. Our stories matter. They hold our lived experiences and the wisdom we pass forward. When we share them, we are witnessed, celebrated, and remembered. We hope you’ll share yours.

Art Installation

Opening at Nuit Blanche, October 3, 2026

For five decades, The 519 has been a beacon for 2SLGBTQ+ communities in Toronto and beyond: a place of refuge, art, advocacy, and collective care. This anniversary invites us to ask: How can The 519 illuminate 2SLGBTQ life, art, and community in public space?

To explore these questions, The 519 has commissioned a contemporary public art installation that will be a new creative landmark in the Church and Wellesley neighbourhood.

“Prismatic Futurity”, designed by Simon Liao, invites audiences to imagine queer futurity with The 519 at the centre of Toronto’s Church-Wellesley Village. Anchored to the facade of The 519 building between the heritage building and the modern addition, the installation unfolds as a field of iridescent triangular pyramids that bridge the past, present, and future.

Using the blank wall as a canvas, “Prismatic Futurity” transforms light and reflection into an evolving landscape of queer imagination. Its iridescent surfaces catch sunlight as it shifts across the day, casting rainbows onto its surroundings. It mirrors queer space itself through its ephemeral yet enduring presence. The installation draws you near as light refracts, then recedes as it fades away.

The triangle, a symbol of queer liberation, collectively reflects The 519’s 50-year legacy of resilience and community serving. As The 519 charts a pathway forward, “Prismatic Futurity” extends an open invitation to imagine, with queer joy, curiosity, and courage, a more equitable and fearless future.

Postcards to the Future

A community art initiative that invites people to share a message with future communities of The 519. Whether you dream of new programs, expanded spaces, advocacy, or simply a world where everyone feels at home, your message helps shape the story of who we are — and who we are becoming. Join us by contributing your voice and creativity to a legacy for future generations of queer kin.

We have commissioned postcard designs from local 2SLGBTQ+ artists that invite creative engagement and prompt participants to consider their vision for the future. We also have blank cards available for those wish to create their own design.

Pre-made postcards can be picked up at The 519 or you can create your own postcard from anywhere in the world and mail it to:

Parties

If there’s one thing we really know how to do, it’s how to party for a cause. This year, we’re turning it all the way up.

Think a Green Space Festival that’s bigger, brighter, and bolder than ever. A 50th anniversary bash you won’t want to miss. Plus a few surprises along the way (okay, more than a few).

When community comes together, good things happen. So all year long, we’ll be celebrating where we’ve been, who we are, and what’s next.

So lower the blinds, fire up the smoke machine, and put on your heels. You’re all coming over!

To find out about upcoming events, follow us on social media or sign up for our newsletter today.

In-Program Activations

Expect year-round pop-up activations, in-program celebrations, and plenty of moments for joy, reflection, and connection along the way. Whether you’re an older adult program participant, stopping by The 519 for a meeting, or part of one of our EarlyON families, there will be opportunities to join in all year long

No matter how you connect with us, we’re making space to celebrate together.
