The 519 Board of Management Candidates 2025 

The 519 membership will elect new members to The 519 Board of Management at our upcoming  Annual General Meeting, details of which are:

  • When: Wednesday, September 25, 2025,
  • Time: A meal will be served at 5:30pm ET; business starts at 6:00pm ET
  • Where: In person at The 519 [519 Church St.] The AGM will also be broadcast virtually.
  • Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. 

There is only one available position to fill on the Board this year, and that position must be filled by someone from the catchment area bounded by Bay, Bloor/Danforth, the Don Valley Parkway and the lands south of the Esplanade.

The 519 Board of Management is recommending a candidate based on the following Board-approved Skills and Experience as well as Recruitment Priorities.

Skills and Experience:

  • Fundraising and Philanthropy
  • 2SLGBTQ+ Government Relations and Advocacy
  • Immigration and/or Refugee Sector Experience (focus on systems/policy transformation and/or related advocacy)
  • Board Leadership, Development and Governance
  • Financial and Business Management Expertise
  • Human Rights Legal Expertise

Recruitment Priorities:

  • Black communities
  • Indigenous communities
  • People of Colour
  • Older 2SLGBTQ+ adults
  • Trans/Non-binary communities
  • 2SLGBTQ+ people with disabilities
  • Women

Mohamed Omar

Bio:

Mohamed Omar is a professor of mathematics at York University whose teaching, research, and leadership have been recognized internationally for excellence and impact. Both within and beyond his academic career, he has held significant governance positions on boards and high-level committees, contributing to strategic planning, policy development, and executive recruitment. A visible and active member of the 2SLGBTQ+ STEM community, Mohamed delivers invited talks, mentors emerging leaders, and embeds inclusive practices into education and outreach. He also maintains a substantial STEM-focused presence on social media platforms, extending his reach to diverse audiences. As a Black, second-generation Canadian, he brings to any leadership role a demonstrated ability to engage diverse stakeholders, cultivate collaboration, and advance equity and meaningful community impact.
