2SLGBTQ+ Older Adults Programs Student Placement
ELEGIBILITY TO APPLY
- The student must be enrolled in a post-secondary or bridging program that requires them to complete a certain number of hours in their field of study as a prerequisite for graduate.
- The student’s academic institution must be registered and in good standing with the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges, and Universities or their appropriate regional governing body.
PRIMARY FUNCTION
Reporting to the 2SLGBTQ Older Adults Programs Coordinator, the student will support community members’ access and participation in The 519’s low-barrier programs and activities; with a focus on 2SLGBTQ+ community members over 50 years old within Toronto’s Downtown East. The programs within this department help decrease the social isolation many people in the 50+ 2SLGBTQ+ communities face.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Support diverse programs and activities including outreach within Downtown East (DTE) communities and actively engaging with community members who attend The 519 programs.
- Work collaboratively with all staff, volunteers, and external partners to ensure a welcoming, accessible, and affirming space at The 519.
- Engage in planning and/or executing and/or tracking and debriefing programs, activities, and events related to 2SLGBTQ Older Adults Programs, Intergenerational programs and/or signature and general events of The 519.
- Co-creation opportunities available across the breadth of work our organization undertakes, including facilitating, co-facilitating, research and event planning
- Effectively track and report activities and engagements (e.g. contacts made, supplies distributed, referrals, etc.).
- Implement and abide by The 519’s policies and procedures and comply with all applicable legislation and regulations including The 519’s anti-discrimination and harassment policies, accessibility
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
- Enrolled in a post-secondary and/or graduate degree in gerontology, community work, recreation for older adults, or related field
- Experience working with the 2SLGBTQ+ community and older adults
- Ability to support community members with resource navigation in a welcoming and friendly manner
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and experience in collaborative work
- Understanding and analysis of the systemic nature of oppression particularly the intersections of race, sexuality, gender, socio-economic status, immigration status and education – and demonstrates a passion for social justice and commitment to equity and anti-racist practice.

Location | Due to the nature of the work, this student placement will be performed primarily on site, |
