The 519’s Glitterbug is an initiative of The 519’s EarlyON Child and Family Centre. It a unique mobile program that works with EarlyON centres across Toronto to promote inclusion and affirmation of gender and sexual diversity in children and families.

Glitterbug combines the understanding of LGBTQ2S inclusion with teaching frameworks for children and families to develop a broader understanding of inclusion at EarlyON centres across the city.

Meet n’ Greet Visits entailed relationship-building, introduction to Glitterbug, sharing information, hearing about strengths, challenges and issued in regard to LGBTQ2S inclusion from staff, and answering any questions that staff had.

Site Observation Visits entailed visiting sites while program was running, conducting a visual audit of the space, meeting children and families, introducing Glitterbug, and gaining an understanding of the program’s comfort level and/or types of resistance in regard to LGBTQ2S content.

In-Program Activity Visits entailed visiting sites during program hours, carrying out activities that promoted LGBTQ2S content and conversation, and sharing resources with families. LBGTQ2S-focused activities included reading a book for story time, introducing inclusive circle time songs, sharing books with children and families, “Love is love” stained-glass art activity,

Workshop/Training Visits entailed a 3-hour LGBTQ2S workshop that covered sex, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation; the impact of inclusion and affirmation for children and families; professional obligations for inclusion; and ways EarlyON spaces can promote LGBTQ2S inclusion and affirmation for children and families.

Pop-up Visits entailed hosting a resource table at a community event, advertising Glitterbug, sharing resources and conducting activities and/or circle time.

Consultation/Support Visits entailed providing information about Glitterbug services, information about LGBTQ2S-inclusive programming and strategies, and other relevant resources.


The 519’s Early ON Programming

Glitterbug is an initiative of The 519’s EarlyON Child and Family Centre. Our programs are designed for LGBTQ2S families and children and are open to all families who are committed to creating safe, affirming, and equitable spaces for everyone.
