Among Friends

Among Friends is The 519’s weekly program for 2SLGBTQ+ refugee claimants. It’s a great way to socialize and make new friends, build community networks, and access information to help with settlement in Canada. Among Friends includes weekly presentations and information sessions on different topics such as immigration/refugee law, employment, and accessing healthcare. A light meal is provided during meetings.

Among Friends is designed to ease the transition for individuals who arrive in Canada escaping persecution at home as a result of their sexual orientation or gender identity. The 519 has offered this peer support program since 2005.

The Among Friends program has grown dramatically each year, becoming one of The 519’s most successful initiatives and producing our largest source of volunteers. A reflection of the changing demographics of Toronto’s 2SLGBTQ+ community, Among Friends is a proud demonstration of The 519’s response to emerging needs.
