Volunteer Position Description Trans Programmes – Trans Youth Toronto Title: Volunteer Cook

Purpose
The TYT volunteer cook is responsible for purchasing and preparing a nutritious meal for the youth that attend Trans Youth Toronto.

Qualifications
The ideal candidate for this position…
· Must be at least 18 years of age.
· Is reliable on a weekly basis
· Is independent and well-organized
· Understands the importance of confidentiality and respect when working with at-risk groups
· Is familiar with anti-oppression principles and practices
· Has an understanding of kitchen safety and safe food handling
· Has previous cooking experience

Also, the following attributes are not required but would be a strong asset in the position…
· Experience cooking for groups and experience with cooking on a limited budget are assets
· Knowledge of trans community issues and youth issues are assets

Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the TYT volunteer cook include, but may not necessariliy be limited to the following:
· Developing a different menu every week
· Purchasing and transporting the food needed for preparation of the meal
· Preparing the meals
· Assisting in the serving the meals as necessary.
· Assisting with the cleaning of the kitchen area and the storage of food and items relevant to meal preparation as required
· Maintaining regular contact with the TYT co-facilitators as questions or concerns arise
· Informing the TYT co-facilitators if unable to prepare a meal on a given week
· Preparing the meals
· Assisting in the serving the meals as necessary.

Orientation/Training
The ideal candidate for this position must…
· have attended a 519 volunteer orientation
· have completed an interview with The 519’s Volunteer Coordinator
· agrees to meet with the TYT co-facilitators for a volunteer orientation session prior to starting the position
· has already completed a Safe Food Handling Certificate course, or agrees to do so within 12 weeks of becoming the TYT volunteer cook.

Hours
Wednesday evenings from at least 4pm until 7pm

Commitment
 6 months minimum.

Supervisor
The TYT volunteer cook reports to the co-facilitators of Trans Youth Toronto.

The co-facilitators provide direction for menu development and for organizing the space, resources, and supporting the work of the volunteer cook as needed.
