Specific Service Volunteers

Title: Legal Advice Laywer

Purpose
  To provide legal advice to 519 clients through The 519 Legal Clinic.

Qualifications
· Must be a lawyer in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada
· General knowledge of a wide range of areas of law, including (but not limited to): immigration/refugee, housing, discrimination/human rights, criminal/violence, labour and social assistance.
· Sensitivity to issues faced by LGBT people, people with low incomes or who live in poverty, and people whose first language is not English
· Minimum 2 years experience in practice

Responsibilities
· Provide legal advice to clients face-to-face
· Record anonymous statistics regarding client issues and provide to the Volunteer Coordinator
· Work with the Front Desk staff on duty to ensure the smooth operation of the legal clinic
· Ensure client access to the clinic in an equitable and fair manner
· Ensure that adequate and effective referrals are provided to clients regarding their situation
· Shall not be retained by 519 clients for legal representation until a period of six (6) months after the client has attended the legal clinic.

Orientation/Training
  Legal advice volunteers receive training and orientation from the Legal Clinic Facilitator.

Hours
  Volunteer commit to a monthly 2-hour shift.

Commitment
 
A minimum of 1 year.

Supervisor
  The Legal Clinic Facilitator supervises the Legal Advice volunteers. The Volunteer Coordinator is an indirect supervisor.
