Title: Kitchen Assistant

Purpose
  To assist staff with the preparation and serving of meal(s) in the drop-in.

Qualifications
· Must be at least 18 years of age.
· Has a clear understanding of agency policies, including boundaries and confidentiality.
· Have good interpersonal skills.
· Have an understanding of kitchen safety and safe food handling.
· Basic cooking skills.

Responsibilities
· Arrives at the kitchen on the scheduled day and time.
· Prepares meals at the direction of the staff cook.
· Assists with serving the meals in the auditorium.
· Assists with the cleaning of the kitchen area and the storage of food and items relevant to meal preparation.
· Calls the Team Captain if they are unable to make a scheduled shift. Calls the Coordinator if a Team Captain is not available.

Orientation/Training
· Has attended a 519 volunteer orientation.
· Has completed an interview with the Volunteer Coordinator.
· Has attended a Homeless & Anti-Poverty Programme volunteer training.
· Has or is willing to attend a Safe Food Handling Certificate course within three months of becoming a kitchen volunteer.
· On site training of the kitchen and storage area by the Team Captain.

Hours
 
Volunteers commit to a weekly or biweekly 4-hour shift.

Commitment
  6 months minimum

Supervisor
  Kitchen volunteers report to the Team Captain. The Homeless and Anti-Poverty Coordinator supervises volunteers. The Volunteer Coordinator is an indirect supervisor. The staff cook provides direction for meal preparation.
