Description:
Since October of 2005, this group has been planning TransFathers 2B
- a preparation for parenting course specifically designed for transmasculine
individuals. The first of its kind in Canada, and only the second worldwide,
the course is focused on the needs of trans men at all stages of deciding
whether and how they wish to parent and preparing to do so.
Since the pilot offering was so well attended and received, the Working
Group is thrilled to announce that the course will be offered again
next year. Participants reported that the course helped them to develop
self-advocacy skills, and fostered a sense of confidence and control
around making decisions about how to parent. Though the workshops have
ended for this year, many of the participants intend to keep in touch
through the broader trans and queer parenting communities. Next year's
offering will be similar to the pilot, though suggestions and feedback
from participants will be incorporated in order to meet the needs of
participants.
Transmasculine individuals seeking to become parents, whether single
or partnered, through birth or adoption or other routes to parenting,
are all welcome to join us next year. Members fo the working group also
provide training to service providers as well as are developing a parenting
options brochure as part of the Queer Parenting Brochure Series.
