What is AFFIRM?
AFFIRM is an 8-week mental health “coping and skills training” group for LGBTQ2S folks that combines approaches from cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) with an anti-oppression framework. The AFFIRM project is a partnership between Planned Parenthood Toronto and Dr. Shelley Craig at U of T, with funding from the Public Health Agency of Canada. Clients who participate in an AFFIRM group are financially compensated for helping to evaluate the program and are also provided with TTC tokens and snacks for each group session. While the group was initially developed for youth, it is now being expanded to adult populations.
Who can we refer to AFFIRM?
AFFIRM is a group for LGBTQ2S people; it has been designed to help our community members cope with the systemic and interpersonal barriers we face and to celebrate our strengths. It is ideal for people who are looking for tools and practices that help to reduce stress, shift unhelpful thinking patterns, and improve self-esteem. It is also a great chance to meet other queer, trans and Two-Spirit folks and build community. At The 519, group participants must be 25 years of age or older. For anyone under 25, there are several other AFFIRM groups happening around Toronto.
When exactly is The 519’s AFFIRM group?
The group will take place on Thursday evenings from 5:30-7PM
