MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR
Let me begin by saying this: we simply must
renovate The 519.
The 519 embodies what I love about life in
Toronto. It represents tolerance and acceptance. Look at some of
the diverse groups who congregate here: a gay square dance club,
the Toronto Centre Rosedale Liberal Riding Association, a transgendered
youth group and the 43rd Toronto Girl Guides.
Whoever walks through its doors is welcomed,
treated with respect and dignity.
I know this because there was a time when
I walked through its doors in search of information about the gay
community. Imagine, in a city the size of Toronto, with such a prominent
gay population, relying on a single place to spread the word about
events, support groups and organizations. I remember feeling such
acceptance and realizing that shame had no place at The 519.
It's common knowledge that gay, lesbian and
transgendered individuals are generous, community-minded people.
We love to give back to the world, and what better way to give back
to our own community than by helping The 519 grow and thrive. This
building, in the heart of Toronto's gay community, is a beacon that
cannot be allowed to dim. It is a shining example to all community
centres across Canada that the gay community can work side by side
with other diverse groups to make a better society.
The design of the extension to The 519 is
both elegant and dynamic (much like the members of our community),
and will serve as the cornerstone in a revitalized Church Street
neighbourhood. In this geographically small corner of the city,
we've accomplished huge things, and we must ensure that our accomplishments
will continue. By supporting The 519, we are leaving a legacy to
the next generation of people who will walk through its doors looking
for acceptance and respect.
